A season-by-season look at exterior home maintenance

This guide is informational and describes common seasonal patterns for windows, gutters, siding and driveways. It is not a substitute for a property-specific inspection.

Spring

Pollen, melt-off and post-winter buildup

Spring tends to bring a visible layer of pollen and dust to windows and siding, along with leftover debris in gutters from the previous fall and winter. Driveways may show salt residue if winter road treatments were used nearby.

  • Check gutters for standing debris left over from winter
  • Inspect downspouts for ice-related separation
  • Note pollen buildup on siding and windows for an early clean
Summer

Algae growth and driveway staining

Warmer, humid months are when algae and mildew tend to appear on siding, particularly on shaded sides of a home. Driveways see more oil drips and tire marks as outdoor activity increases.

  • Look for green or black streaking on north-facing siding
  • Check for standing water near downspout outlets after storms
  • Note new driveway stains before they set further
  • Check window screens for pollen or insect residue
Fall

Leaf drop and gutter capacity

Fall is typically the season with the heaviest gutter load, as falling leaves accumulate faster than they wash through on their own. This is also a common time to address siding before winter weather sets in.

  • Clear gutters more frequently as leaves accumulate
  • Check downspout flow before the first hard freeze
  • Address siding grime while temperatures still allow outdoor cleaning
  • Clear driveway debris before leaves compact into wet mats
  • Inspect window seals ahead of colder weather
Winter

Ice, salt and limited access

Winter often limits what exterior cleaning is practical, since ice on gutters and siding can make some work unsafe. Driveway cleaning during this season tends to focus on salt residue once temperatures allow.

  • Watch for ice buildup in gutters that can add weight to brackets
  • Note salt residue on driveways for a spring rinse
  • Schedule siding or window work for milder winter days when possible
